My approach when working with people with COPD is, above all, gentle and supportive. If you’re reading this and have COPD yourself, you may have been recently diagnosed, or perhaps you’ve been living with the condition for some time. In my experience, many people come to me having lost hope that anything can be done to improve their situation.
Most individuals with COPD rely solely on their prescribed medication and don’t explore other options. Unfortunately, many have never been told that improving their breathing patterns could make a meaningful difference.
Living with chronic breathlessness is, of course, extremely challenging. There is also a strong psychological aspect to respiratory conditions—anxiety can worsen symptoms and negatively affect breathing patterns. This, alongside COPD itself, can often make things feel even more difficult.
That’s why, first and foremost, I teach people how to breathe in a way that promotes calm. From there, we work on breathing more efficiently, helping them get the most out of every breath.
As your breathing becomes calmer and more efficient, you may begin to feel better over time. Many people notice improvements in their overall health, including increased energy levels, better sleep, and a more positive mood. The condition often starts to feel less overwhelming and less in control of daily life.
I encourage anyone with COPD to consider working with a qualified Buteyko teacher—whether that’s myself or another experienced practitioner. I’ve worked with people well into their eighties who have benefited greatly, often saying their only regret is not starting sooner.
