Few doctors prescribe anything other than inhalers for asthma. As a practitioner of the Buteyko breathing method, I see this as a missed opportunity. Buteyko can be life-changing—and in my experience, it often is. While there is published research supporting its effectiveness, it inevitably struggles to compete with the scale and influence of pharmaceutical treatments.
That said, I treat medical advice regarding inhaler use with the utmost respect. My approach is always to work at a pace that matches your individual capacity, encouraging you to continue using your inhaler whenever you need it. The goal is not to replace medication abruptly, but to gradually reduce symptoms and, where possible, lessen reliance on it. Even when significant progress is made, I always recommend carrying an inhaler as a precaution.
No two people experience asthma in the same way. Symptoms, triggers, and tolerance levels vary, which is why I tailor my approach to suit you. We work within your comfort zone, building progress steadily and safely. As you begin to feel the benefits—often sooner than expected—that improvement becomes a powerful motivator to continue. That’s one of the reasons the Buteyko method can be so effective.
Decades ago, before a fuller understanding of asthma emerged, it was often considered a psychosomatic condition, attributed largely to anxiety. Today, we know that while anxiety is not the root cause, it can act as a trigger or aggravating factor. Asthma and anxiety frequently go hand in hand, and the experience of breathlessness itself can be deeply unsettling.
In my work, helping you learn how to manage that anxiety is just as important as improving your breathing. When you begin to feel more in control of your breath, you also begin to feel more in control of your symptoms. This broader approach goes beyond breathing exercises alone, addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of asthma.
